What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice based on observing the forces of nature and their interaction with the environment. This discipline argues that the décor and arrangement of objects in the home can affect the flow of life energy, known as "chi", and therefore affect the health, well-being, and success of the person. We are therefore not talking about a purely aesthetic style, but something much more important.

Key Principles of Feng Shui in Furniture

  1. Harmonic flow: The chi must be able to flow unimpeded through the different spaces of the house. Avoid clutter and bulky furnishings, as they risk creating a "wall" by interrupting the natural flow of energy. Keep the doors of the rooms open as much as possible, living in an open space would be the best for a perfect Feng Shui home!
  2. Balance of the Five Elements: According to Feng Shui, there are 5 elements that cannot be missing: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Use objects and colors associated with these elements to maintain energy balance. For example, fire can be represented by candles, earth by the presence of plants, and so on.
  3. Furniture Location: The arrangement of furniture in Feng Shui is critical. The structure of the house and the furnishings should promote the smoothest possible circulation and create a sense of unity and harmony. Avoid positions where your shoulders (e.g. of a sofa) are facing doors or windows, it is always better to look towards the sunlight!
  4. Natural Light: Natural light is essential for the well-being of body and psyche (if you are interested read our article about it -> link). Open the windows to let in light, air, and energy. Air recirculation is very important in order not to "block" energy flows.
  5. Zone Bagua: The Zone Bagua is an energy grid that divides space into nine sectors. Each industry represents an aspect of life, such as career, family, and prosperity, and so on. Furnish and organize each area in a way that is consistent with its attributes, learn to keep the space in which you work separate from the one in which you relax or play with your children, for example.
  6. Strategic Mirrors: Mirrors can reflect and amplify energy. Then position them to reflect something pleasant, such as a plant or landscape, and avoid reflecting negative, dark, or gloomy elements.
  7. Cleanliness and Stagnant Energies: Keeping your home clean and tidy is crucial to Feng Shui. Negative energy can accumulate in messy, chaotic spaces and stagnate and become a source of negativity. Remove broken or unused objects that can hold negative energies and make room for new things or simply leave the surfaces free so that everything is more harmonious and fluid!
